Do I really need an on-line presence?
Is the Internet mostly hype or will it really change the way
we live? Are the people making money out of the Internet driving
the hype or will it really be the way the world does business?
Twelve months ago these questions could have been cause for
debate. But today, the evidence is overwhelming. Businesses
that ignore the commercial capabilities of Web do so at their
own peril. The facts are:
- Global Internet users will grow 181% from 142 million in
1998 to 399 million in 2002. Australian users will grow 241%
from 3.2 million to 10.9 million International Data
Corporation.
- Global e-commerce sales will grow 1366% from US$50 billion
in 1998 to US$733 billion in 2002. Australian e-commerce sales
will grow 4158% from A$256 million in 1998 to A$10.9 billion
in 2002 International Data Corporation.
- Global on-line retail sales will reach US$184 billion by
2004 Forrester Research.
- Global on-line business to business (b-to-b) sales are growing
almost three times faster than on-line consumer sales.
- The longer a b-to-b site has been up the higher chance it
has of being profitable. 27% of b-to-b sites are profitable
after less than 12 months. 32% are profitable after two years.
And 42% are now profitable after three years - Activmedia.
